A Conservatory that bears the name of Manitas de Plata is a symbol of sharing music on a global level. And European. Also, the Sète association Filomer did not hesitate to support a project by Bernard Lonjon, “7 inspirations de Manitas 7” which is one of the 50 selected for Montpellier Sète’s candidacy for the title of European Capital of Culture.

The author of the biography, Manitas de Plata. The lion with silver claws which will be released in a few days, has already signed the exhibition installed at the Conservatory for the centenary of the guitarist. This project is close to his heart… just as much as a future film on Maurice Chevalier which will take him away from Sète!

This concert is the result of research carried out by ethnomusicologist Guy Bertrand in 202 , when his “gypsy symphony” presented “Little Silver Hands” at the Théâtre de la Mer. « inspirations »seven in number, are placed under the sign of exchanges and revisit the repertoires which inspired Manitas and which currently inspire the young Catalan gypsies of the group Los Graciosos who recently came to Sète for Saint-Louis: “It’s Manitas with young people who don’t forbid anything, like him. A fresco of great richness. » The seven musicians were in residence for six months at the Hotel Pams in Perpignan: “It’s interesting to see how young people today can receive this music and rework it in their own way. »

In addition to this group founded in 2018 and a string quartet from the CRI, the program particularly highlights the descendants of Manitas and Antonio Gimenez Gimenez de Lérida around flamenco, a big question posed by Manitas… Final surprise: an ultimate horizon opened up by Rey Baliardo (ex-wild child of the eponymous film by François-Truffaut) and an oriental vision, the Guitaras morescas recreated with gembri (string lute). Manitas, a legend that continues to be written.
