West Antarctica is home to one of the frozen continent’s “reference” glaciers. Pine Island Glacier covers an area of ​​about 175 thousand square km and is one of the fastest moving glaciers in Antarctica.

In recent years, climate change has led to its rapid melting. At some point, a huge crevasse about 30 km long, 80 meters wide and 70 meters deep was created in the glacier. This process causes the detachment of huge chunks of ice that turn into icebergs. Chunks of ice similar in size to that of Singapore have broken off.

In the case of the Pine Island Glacier, it has recently been shown that the glacier is not only affected by the increase in atmospheric temperature and its surface melts, but that it is also greatly affected by the increase in the temperature of the waters in which it is located, thus accelerating its melting.

A new study by scientists from the British Antarctic Mission, Britain’s permanent and large-scale research program on the frozen continent, attests to the rapid rate at which the glacier is melting. The results of the study show that if the glacier collapses, the planet’s sea level will rise by half a meter, sending many island and coastal areas of the Earth under water. A previous study reported that the 180-trillion-year-old Pine Island Glacier tons of ice has only 20 more years to live, so it is not excluded based on the new study that its end will come even earlier.
