Nîmes: Robert Schumann and Betsy Jolas will be the headliners of the next Les Volques music festival

Between December 7 and 11, in several places in the city, the music festival Les Volques, whose artistic direction is entrusted to Carole Roth-Dauphin, will allow the music-loving public to attend many events, between concerts, meetings and master classes. For this third edition, Robert Schumann and the contemporary composer Betsy Jolas will be face-to-face in a program where romantic pieces and rare or unpublished works will follow one another throughout the five days.

The concept of the festival is undoubtedly unique and the many appointments that the days offer give music lovers rare opportunities to hear pieces that concert halls hardly highlight during the seasons. Since autumn 2020, Les Volques has taken a special place on the cultural calendar of the city. Thanks to the content and the artists who come to Nîmes to express their art in a new program.

Five days in December

For this third edition, whose artistic direction goes to Carole Roth-Dauphin, a new exciting confrontation between two musical personalities. After Beethoven and Schubert in previous years, this time Robert Schumann and, for the contemporary face-to-face section, Betsy Jolas will succeed Philippe Manoury and Helmut Lachenmann. So much for the headliners of the string of meetings scheduled throughout the five days of December.

For Betsy Jolas, undeniable figure of contemporary creation, an opportunity to see many of her works included in the festival program. Born in 1926 and of Franco-American origin, the composer was a pupil of great figures, such as Darius Milhaud, Olivier Messian or Arthur Honegger. And throughout her career, she exchanged and shared with world-renowned artists, such as Boulez, Stockhausen or John Cage.

More than twenty pieces by Betsy Jolas are programmed

During this festival, more than twenty of his plays, sometimes short and sometimes relatively recent, will be subject to the interest, curiosity and sensitivity of the public. Great opportunity to discover the particularity, the characteristics and the diversity in the writing of his compositions.

Faithful to the spirit intended from the outset, Les Volques will invest many sites in the city. Thus, the Carré d’art, the Spot, the hall of the Odéon, that of the Bernadette-Lafont theater, the museum of Fine arts, that of Romanity, and the Court of Appeal of the court will host the concerts or master class.

The Michael Spyres-Mathieu Pordoy duo returns for the third edition

For this edition, there will be countless artists, regular guests or newcomers, individually or in groups, who will perform the chosen works. Between the pianist Cédric Tiberghien and the Diotima quartet, Jean-François Heisser and the soloists of the Les Siècles orchestra, the musicians of the various sections concerned, the mezzo Isabelle Druet (who is currently singing in Cologne in Berlioz’s “Les Troyens” under the direction of François-Xavier Roth), and the luxury duo Michael Spyres-Mathieu Pordoy, precious moments to be expected.
