Ryan Grantham shot his mother while she was playing the piano

American actor Ryan Grantham was sentenced to life in prison after pleading guilty to murdering his mother, Barbara Waite, in 2020.

The 24-year-old, who played Jeffery Augustine in the teen drama Riverdale, was sentenced by British Columbia Supreme Court in Vancouver.

He pleaded guilty to second-degree murder after initially being charged with first-degree murder.

Prosecutors said he also planned to kill Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Grantham admitted to shooting his mother in the back of the head as she played the piano at their home north of Vancouver.

“I killed my mother”

In a video shot on a Go-Pro camera after the murder, the Canadian actor filmed his mother’s body while saying: “I shot her in the back of the head. In the moments that followed, he would know it was me.”

After drinking beer and smoking marijuana for hours after the assassination, he prepared a car with three guns, ammunition and 12 self-made Molotov cocktails, as well as camping supplies and directions to the Canadian prime minister’s Rideau Cottage residence.

He drove about 200 kilometers east to the town of Hope, before turning around and heading to a Vancouver police station, where he told an officer: “I killed my mother.”

The court was also told that Grantham had considered committing an act of mass violence on Vancouver’s Lions Gate Bridge or at Simon Fraser University, where he was a student, en route before turning his car around and surrendering.

Ryan Grantham appeared in a 2019 episode of Riverdale, Supernatural, and the 2010 film Diary of a Wimpy Kid.

He has been in custody for the past two and a half years, Vancouver law enforcement officials told Deadline, and has been in a mental health program since his arrest.

During the trial, his lawyers argued that he struggled with anxiety and clinical depression and had expressed a desire to kill himself and harm others in the months leading up to his mother’s murder.

He will not be eligible for parole for the first 14 years of his life sentence.
