Irakli Garibashvili: Georgia follows the path of European and Euro-Atlantic integration

Irakli Garibashvili called for the protection of the basic principles proclaimed by the UN, stressing that today they are openly violated, as acts of aggression are committed against members of the Organization. He recalled that in 2008 his country was “attacked by Russia, as a result of which 20 percent of the territory of Georgia was occupied. The international community called it aggression,” said the representative of Georgia. He spoke in favor of advancing the Geneva international discussions in order to return Russia to the negotiating table and force it to comply with the 2018 ceasefire agreement.

“Although part of the country is still occupied by Russia, we are trying to prevent this problem from hindering our development,” the head of the Georgian government said. He spoke about the country’s achievements in the field of economy and democratic reforms.

Garibashvili again recalled the European and Euro-Atlantic choice of his country, and also spoke in favor of strengthening international cooperation. “We are steadily moving along the path of European and Euro-Atlantic integration. We are committed to this goal. We confirm this with actions and concrete results, including the signing of association agreements and visa-free regime with the EU,” said Irakli Garibashvili.

Georgia applied for full EU membership this year. The prospects for joining the EU are a powerful motivation for the citizens of Georgia, the Prime Minister noted. According to him, Georgia deserves the status of a candidate member of the EU, and full membership in the European Union “will make it possible to realize the dream of generations.”

“Speaking at the UN General Assembly, I would like to directly address the brothers and sisters from Abkhazia and Ossetia and tell them again that our strength is in unity, and that together we will build Georgia, turn it into a free and prosperous united European country.

War in Ukraine

Stating that the war has now broken out again near the borders of Georgia, Irakli Garibashvili stressed that Russia’s full-scale war in Ukraine undermines the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine, violates the UN Charter and the basic principles of international law.

“Georgia has been on the side of Ukraine since the beginning of the war,” the prime minister said. He said that Georgia sent more than a million tons of humanitarian aid to Ukraine, provides financial assistance, helps refugees from Ukraine who arrived in Georgia, and provides education for Ukrainian children in the Ukrainian language. Georgia, according to Irakli Garibashvili, supported more than 400 resolutions, statements and initiatives in support of Ukraine.

The head of government said that Georgia complies with the sanctions regime against the Russian Federation and adheres to the restrictive measures of the EU on Crimea and Sevastopol.

Regional Mediation Efforts

Speaking about the fact that Georgia is an integral part of the European architecture, Garibashvili called for greater stability in the South Caucasus. The Prime Minister reported on the mediation efforts of his country. He spoke about the successful experience of exchanging 15 dreaded Armenians for maps of minefields in Aghdam. The prime minister recalled that in July the ministers of Azerbaijan and Armenia met for the first time in Tbilisi, adding that Georgia is an honest mediator and acts in the interests of peace in the region.

The head of the Georgian government expressed his hope that the South Caucasus would become a real bridge between the West and the East, and named as Georgia’s task the transformation of the South Caucasus into a region of opportunities and economic growth.
