Stockholm The International Ski and Snowboard Federation is currently considering allowing Russian athletes to start again. That doesn’t go down well with everyone.
The Swedish cross-country skiers are mobilizing against a possible return of their Russian and Belarusian competitors. Should the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) allow the athletes from said countries for the upcoming season, they would boycott the World Championships in Planica, said Maja Dahlqvist and Linn Svahn. The FIS plans to address the issue on October 22nd.
“This is about something bigger than sport, a boycott would be a matter of course,” two-time Olympic silver medalist Dahlqvist told Aftonbladet newspaper. Svahn called the comeback plans “disgraceful and out of order”. As long as Russia is at war with Ukraine, a return is out of the question. She would “definitely” stay away from the World Cup, stressed the five-time individual World Cup winner.
Similar considerations also exist in Norway. The World Championships in Slovenia will take place from February 21st to March 5th, the World Cup season will start at the end of November in Ruka, Finland.
