Factories “meet” and celebrate European Heritage Days

What do an old gas factory, a silk factory and a hat factory have in common? On the occasion of this year’s celebration of European Days of Cultural Heritage on September 23-25 ​​and has the theme of sustainable cultural heritage, three emblematic cultural sites of the Municipality of Athens with significant industrial past join forces through the planning of educational actions and demonstrate that synergy between cultural entities is a driver of sustainability.

In this context, the Industrial Museum of Light Gas housed in the old gas plant that provided light and energy to the capital for more than 120 years, the Gallery of the Municipality of Athens which functioned as a silk factory naming the area Metaxourgeio as well as the “Melina” Cultural Center hosted in the oldest sawmill in Athens, the Poulopoulos Sawmill, more commonly known as Pil-Poul, invite young and old to a unique journey through the history of industrial heritage, through a series of educational activities with free participation.

The actions will take place on Sunday, September 25 from 11.00 at the Melina Cultural Center and the Athens Municipality Art Gallery which will open their gates to welcome the participants. At the same time, the Industrial Gas Museum will leave the old factory for a while and will be “transported” to the two spaces through photographs, archival material, as well as the physical presence of its museum-educators in order to shed “its light” on the history and the operation of the gas plant of Athens.

Participants will take part in a visual storytelling workshopin a manufacturing workshop and to one historical walk, discovering in a creative way the history of the three monuments that contributed to the industrialization of the country and changed the modern history of the place. They will also discover the evolution of the three spaces into living cultural organizations, open to the public and in absolute connection with the city of Athens.

The Fox who became… a hat!

Educational program for families with children 4-7 years old

What do silk, light and hats have in common? The team of the “Melina” Cultural Center welcomes the team of the Fotaeri Industrial Museum and, inspired by the first sawmill and also the first power plant in Greece, offer in collaboration an entertaining visual storytelling workshop for children. Participants will have the opportunity to laugh at the adventures of a fox who wanted to become a hat and was very afraid of the dark! They will then discover the different types of hats and come into contact with many different materials (some of them resemble silk!) while creating their own original hat!

Historical walk for teenagers and adults

The Athens Municipality Art Gallery organizes an exciting historical walk in the area, during which visitors will have the opportunity to see rich photographic material making a journey through time, to the Metaxourgeio of yesterday and today! Interesting stories will unfold and keep the interest of the teenagers and adults who will be participating. During the walk, reference will be made to the old Gazi LPG factory and the Pil-Pul hat factory which today house the LPG Industrial Museum and the Melina Cultural Center respectively. The two neighboring factories will “travel” to Metaxourgeio through photos and rich archival material.

Silk wings
Art workshop for children 4-7 years old

What do coal, kerosene and art have to do with each other? Can wings become a means of time travel? Through an artistic workshop, the young participants get to know mixed techniques, experiment with different materials and make their own wings!
