Cinemed in Montpellier: the couple Rachida Brakni and Eric Cantona will chair the 44th edition of the festival

For the very first time, a couple will preside over the jury of Cinemed, the Mediterranean film festival in Montpellier, and what a couple! The actress and director Rachida Brakni and the actor and former footballer (genius, we dare say) Eric Cantona.

After the invitation of the most intense director of French cinema, Abdellatif Kechiche, the international festival of Mediterranean cinema (Cinemed) is once again causing a sensation with the announcement of the very first co-presidency for its jury of the Antigone d’ gold. It is therefore Rachida Brakni and Eric Cantona who will chair the debates for the awarding of the supreme award for the 44th edition of the festival which will be held in Montpellier, from October 21 to 29.

“Intelligence, commitment, benevolence”

The Cinemed team justifies their choice: “This Mediterranean duo combines intelligence, commitment, benevolence, glamor and crazy talent. He, the footballer born in Marseille, adored across the Channel, has proven to be a remarkable actor; she, born of Algerian parents, gifted as much for music as for cinema, a resident of the Comédie-Française, quickly established herself as an actress and director.”

These two strong personalities met just twenty years ago on the set of Thierry Binisti’s film, “The Overeater”, adaptation of a successful comic book by Tonino Benacquista and Jacques Ferrandez. Eric Cantona delivered a stunning performance in the role of a bulimic and obese police commissioner, and Rachida Brakni played a painter whom his character suspected of murder but with whom he fell in love… Five years later, Rachida Brakni and Eric Cantona were getting married, and they have since had two children.

A journey between Comédie-Française and cinema

Resident of the Comédie-Française in the early 2000s, Rachida Brakni had exploded in the cinema in 2001 thanks to her role as a prostitute rediscovering the taste for life in the film Chaos by Coline Serreau. She had received the following year the César for best female hope. Since then, alternating with demand and passion between theater and cinema, she has also launched herself successfully into song, releasing a first album in 2012 (with certain texts by Eric Catona, and music by Cali), then another in 2017 under the name of Lady Sir with Gaëtan – Louise Attaque – Roussel. His next movie Houria, directed by Mounia Meddour, will be released in theaters on March 15, 2023.

As for Eric Cantona, what can I say that hasn’t already been better said? Genius footballer, football thinker, punchliner before the invention of the punchline, the Marseillais first established himself in the cinema as a nature, an immediately inspiring and endearing personality, and gradually revealed himself on the boards and on screen, a talent commensurate with his charisma… out of the ordinary. The recent television adaptation of Black frames by Pierre Lemaitre, skids, mini-series directed by Ziad Doueiri for the arte channel.

In short, the arrival of this couple like no other, talented, passionate, committed, generous, with Mediterranean roots of deep truth, raises a serious notch, the impatience to frequent the rooms and spaces of the 44th Cinemed. We repeat it, to fix it: start of the festivities on October 21!
