A new insect named Djokovic: why Serbian scientists chose this name?

Serbian scientists have announced that they have discovered a new species of insect to which they have decided to give the name of Novak Djokovic in tribute to the tennis champion, because of the qualities of speed and tenacity of the little beast.

Duvalius Djokovici was found in a cave in a mountain in western Serbia, explained Friday October 7 Nikola Vesovic, one of the members of this team. “It is a tiny insect, completely blind and depigmented, with very long legs and antennae,” said the scientist, professor at the Faculty of Biology in Belgrade.

But it is the speed, tenacity, strength and elasticity of the animal that decided the researchers to give it the name of the Serbian champion, former world number one holder of 21 Grand Slam titles.

After last year’s freshwater snail

“It is a predator of the basements in the same way as Novak Djokovic is a kind of predator on the tennis court,” said Professor Vesovic. But this is not the first time that Novak Djokovic has inspired scientists.

Last year, a freshwater snail discovered in Montenegro was named Travunijana Djokovici. The tennis star is currently taking part in the 500 series tournament in Astana after being deprived of the Australian Open in January and American tournaments, including the US Open, due to his refusal to take a Covid shot. -19.
