A high-tech hoverbike, which its Japanese makers plan to launch commercially in the US next year, made its US market debut yesterday at the Detroit Auto Show, prompting inevitable comparisons to space bikes speed of the “Star Wars” movies.

The XTURISMO technological hover bike is manufactured by the Japanese technology company ERWINS Technologies, while it can fly for 40 minutes, at a speed that can reach 100 kilometers per hour. “I felt like I was 15 years old and I had just stepped out of a ‘Star Wars’ movie using one of their bikes,” said auto show co-chairman Thad Schott after a test ride of the said aerial vehicle, or rather, after a test swing.

“I mean, that’s impressive! Of course, you have a little fear, but I was so excited, I felt like a little kid,” he added. The suspension bike is already on sale in Japan, and AERWINS founder and CEO Shuhei Komatsu said the company is working on plans to sell a smaller model in the U.S. in 2023. The price of the XTURISMO? That comes to $777,000, despite Komatsu saying his company hopes to drop the cost to $50,000 for a smaller electric model from 2025.
